Scientific research has not often been thought of as overarching with visual arts because art is seen as a creative discipline, expressive practice and science as an analytical and a precise discipline. However, there is a significant crossover between the subjects. There is a great deal of science behind the history of colors and how colors were extracted and used. For centuries, many colors such as white lead, Scheele’s green, vermilion or Naples yellow, just to name a few, were highly sought after but also tied to harmful toxicity. While visiting the exhibits at the Art Institute of Chicago, I realized how important the role of colors and their history, and scientific discovery has been in visual arts. Also, I thought how much the chemical composition of colors has directly influenced the trajectory of of my art practice and as an art teacher.
